Chris Hile Pre-Race Brewerton August 2nd
Season of Surprises Continue at Fulton Speedway
FULTON, NY - JULY 20, 2013 (By Dave Medler) - Everyone in attendance Saturday night at the Fulton Speedway left talking about what they saw in the Modified and Sportsman features in what is being called the best races of the 2013 season to date.
In the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds, Chris Hile was not only watching the gauges on his overheating car, but also a handful of drivers who took their shots at him in the closing laps of the 35 lap feature. When starter Ricky Breed waved the Checkers, Hile picked up his first career big block modified win anywhere by inches over Chad Phelps. Looking at the AMB scoring, the top-four finishers were separated by less than one second. Nick Krause in his first full season in the SUNY Canton Sportsman had to hold off Corey Barker and veteran Matt Janczuk over the second half of the 20 lap feature for his career first win. Just like the modifieds, Krause, Janczuk and Barker were also separated by less than one second at the checkers. Other winners on Sunoco Fulton Ethanol Facility night were, Dale Caswell, NAPA Late Models, Ron Ingison, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman and Chuck Powelczyk, Four Cylinder Stocks. Matt Hulsizer got the jump on Tim Schneider and the rest of the field to lead the early going of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature. With 10 laps showing on the lap counter, Hulsizer and Roy Bresnahan were in a two car breakaway fight for the lead. A few car lengths back, Chris Hile, Adam Roberts, Dan Vauter and Tom Sears Jr. were using every inch of the racing surface battling for third through sixth. On lap 12 the yellow would fly for Rob Bellinger who got turned around in turns three and four. He would continue at the back of the field. When the green came back out there was a huge shuffle at the front of the field as Hile and Vauter blew past the top-two to show the way on lap 13. At the halfway point, Hile, Vauter and Sears were in a three car shuffle for the lead, with Bresnahan and Chad Phelps right there waiting for any mistake by the top-three. With 10 laps to go, Hile still led running the top of the speedway with Vauter right in his tire tracks. Larry Wight was now making his presence known running third in his new Troyer with Sears, Hulsizer and Phelps still in the hunt. Over the remaining laps the incredible shootout was on, with a handful of drivers so close they all had a shot at the victory as the used every inch of the Fulton "High Banks." On lap 33 Chad Phelps moved into second and pulled right in on Hile actually holding a slight lead on the white flag lap. Hile and Phelps exited turn four for the drag race to the checkers that saw Hile beat Phelps by a mere 0.114 at the line. Dan Vauter, Billy Decker and Larry Wight came home third through fifth. AMB scoring showed the top-four separated by 0.457 of a second. Hile did a roof celebration on his Lightning Management/Ernie Kreis & Sons Heating Co./Scott Jeffrey's Performance/Gypsum Express/No.5H. He then celebrated with his family and girlfriend Katelyn Kane, who pulled her modified over to be part of the victory. Hile then talked about his first win in four years of Big Block Modified racing. "The car is a little warm right now. I could see my gauges flashing at me. One lap I ran in the middle and the car seemed to cool off a little. I don't know if we broke a radiator hose or what," Hile said about a problem he had throughout the 35 lap feature. "I was my kicking myself for staying out there because it's my only motor." He also related when you're in the lead and that close to a win he wasn't stopping. "It's been four years of extremely hard work. Not only by me but by my father and everyone in my family. It didn't matter if we ran sixteenth or win, we worked just as hard on the car week in and week out. I'm just so proud to be here right now," said Hile in a humble but excited voice. Hile then talked about the final intense laps. "It was wild. I was running the bottom prior to that last restart," when he took the lead on lap 13. "Usually on cold tires we fire pretty good. I was right on Matt's (Hulsizer) bumper and thought maybe if I toss it right in the middle I could get a good run, and pretty much came off turn four with the lead. I tried it up on the top side and it stuck. Kind of lived and died by the top." "The last couple laps I saw Chad (Phelps) and it was a fight between us and me looking at my water temperature gauge. We managed to hold out. It's been so long and so many attempts to win. Now that we're here, it's awesome." Not to be outdone in excitement, the 20 lap SUNY Canton Sportsman feature put on as many thrills over the last half of the race as the modifieds did. Corey Barker and Nick Krause battled at the front of the field, with Barker leading the first 8 laps hugging the bottom of the speedway until a quick yellow on lap 8. On the restart Krause used the top to bolt into the lead on lap 9. One lap past halfway, Matt Janczuk, who has more years racing than Krause and Barker combined moved into third and the three-way battle was on for the win. Lap after lap Janzcuk and Barker threw everything they had at Krause , but Krause, only in his first full season, showed the skills of a veteran as he hit his marks and was the first under the checkers for his first career win. Krause, Janczuk and Barker were separated by only 0.377of a second at the finish. "Dominance" is the one word description for Dale Caswell in the 20 lap NAPA Late Model feature. Caswell took the lead on lap 4 when Shayne Tenace broke for the second week in a row while leading. Once out front Caswell was on rails the rest of the way winning by almost six seconds at the finish for his second win in a row. Rick Miller, AJ Kingsley, Alan Fink and Brandon ford finished second through fifth. In the E&V Energy Novice Sportsman,Ron Ingison who only makes a start or two a season behind the wheel of the Jeremy Pitcher, No.14, showed his natural talent behind the wheel. Ingison started 13th and then swapped the lead back and forth late in the going with past feature winner Jeremy Dygert before picking up the win over points leader Gary Hoppins by less than a second at the checkers. Dygert, Taylor Lamb and Kyle Kiehn finished second through fifth. The E&V Energy Sportsman continues to grow as 18 cars took the green in the 15 lap feature. It doesn't seem to matter if it's Brewerton or Fulton Speedway, Chuck Powelczyk seems to find a way to victory lane. Powelczyk took the lead early in the 15 lap feature and never looked back. Skip DeGroff, Justin Buske, Mark Johnston and Chris Bonoffski chased the winner across the line in the top-five. This coming Saturday, July 27th will be a big night for the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modifieds as they will have a qualifier for the Outlaw 200 on October 4-5. Also on the race card will be the SUNY Canton Sportsman, NAPA Late Models, E&V Energy Novice Sportsman, Four Cylinder Stocks and Mod Lites. Gates will open at 5:00 with racing at 7:00. Doug Elkins Writes About Chris Hile's First Modified Win in the Post Standard: July 23rd
While that was going on, another driver won his first at Fulton Speedway a few miles to the south. Chris Hile, 26, took the lead early in the 35-lap modified feature but he had his eyes on his gauges more than the track. "The car was running hot and I messed up probably four or five laps." Hile said. "With a couple of laps to go I said, 'You know what? I'm not going to even look at the water temp gauge anymore, I'm going to start driving it.'"
Hile briefly lost the lead to Chad Phelps on the white flag lap but was determined to get it back. "Chad was ahead of me going into (turn) three and in the middle of three, and I got a good run out of four and beat him to the line," Hile said. It was the first career win for the driver from Syracuse and it came in his fourth year of modified racing. Nick Krause also picked up his first career win in the sportsman feature at Fulton. |
